Drawing Pixels with Keyboard

Reported by: littledeviantart32@… Owned by: pulkomandy

Description

Hello, I want to request this feature because I hate drawing pixel art with a mouse.

Arrow keys - move cursor one pixel
Z - place down a pixel of the primary color onto where the cursor is
X - secondary color
A/S - change primary color to previous/next one in the palette
Q/W - same but for the secondary
E - Automatically switch secondary color to transparent color - "Eraser"

I'm sorry if these already conflict with some of the bindings in Grafx2 but I feel this is the most ergonomic way to use the keyboard to move the cursor and plot pixels. Perhaps have a setting you can check off in the options that that enables these bindings as an override.

Please I am begging you, I am trying to make open source sprites for the copyright free version of Zelda Classic (Action game maker, the community is at PureZC.net) so that we don't get sued. But I can't draw sprites well using the mouse no matter how hard I try, so I really need to be able to just draw pixel art using the keyboard only.

well using the keyboard is already supported.
by default, it is CTRL + arrow keys.
You can change all key bindings in the Help (Keyboard Shortcuts section)

Oh, good. Most image editors don't let you change the bindings! So how do I place down a pixel where the cursor is, using a button. Is that already in GrafX2 or needs to be added?

For painting with primary and secondary color, set the controls for "Left click" and "Right click".

I just notice that we have a button to set the secondary color to the "transparent" color (right-click "Get/set transparent col" button when the Anim/Layers toolbar is set to "Layers") but there's no keyboard shortcut attached. At the time, I didn't think it would be useful, sorry.

change primary color to previous/next one in the palette
same but for the secondary

Near the end of the list :
"Select foreground color", default [ and ]
"Select background color", default Shift-[ and Shift-]

Er, when I try to replace the move cursor 1px up with "Up Arrow", it sets it to "Ctrl+Shift+PgDown". This is using the latest stable release. Is the "pan viewing area" shortcut (on Up) contradicting with that? I'm not sure how to swap them.

Also don't sweat about not having the keyboard shortcut for setting secondary to transparent color. That's miniscule. Thanks for all the other keyboard shortcuts.

Well this is bizarre. I set all the pan viewing area shortcuts to "none", but only the "move mouse cursor down 1px" sets correctly. All the other shortcuts do what you see here, even when I'm only pressing the arrow key when setting the shortcut. I don't see any other shortcuts taking priority.

Which "API" version are you using ? win32 ? SDL ? SDL2 ? X11 ?

Win32

Also I should mention that I tried "Right" again and it was Alt+Shift+PGDN. But that doesn't change the underlying issue, just a little accident I did before by accidentally holding Ctrl when trying to test it. The issue at hand with assigning the "Up" "Left" and "Right" keys to move the cursor is still there.

could you try with the SDL version ?

http://grafx2.chez.com/index.php?static3/downloads
Link me please. All I see here is Win32.

If you download the "Nightly build (latest changes, may be unstable)" you'll notice you get 3 versions. They are all for windows but uses different UI API :
win32, SDL and SDL2
Keyboard input is different between all versions.

by the way, can you always details the precise GrafX2 version you are testing ?
it is displayed in the statistics screen

I notice there is a bug in the win32 version with the emulation of mouse cursor move :(
So test with SDL and SDL2 only.

Oh yes, the SDL2 nightly build works well. Thanks for that advice. I guess that new version fixes the bug in the 2.6 Win32 milestone version.
